Fourth Walk As One event brings fundraising total to over £200K!

Over 400 fantastic fundraisers turned Endcliffe Park into a sea of purple last weekend, in our fourth Walk As One event.

Supporters took on 2-, 4-, and 10-mile routes through the stunning Sheffield countryside – all to raise vital funds for people impacted by cancer.

We’re delighted to share that last weekend’s event raised over £42,000, which brings Walk As One’s fundraising total to over £200K!

This tremendous sum will help us to care, in every sense, for the one in two people in our region who will be diagnosed with cancer.

Several well-known faces took part this year, including double Olympian Joslyn Hoyte-Smith MBE. Joslyn gave the official countdown for the 10-mile route, before taking part herself in memory of football legend Uriah Rennie.

Uriah made history as the Premier League’s first black referee and left a lasting impact on Sheffield – including through his work as a Weston Park Cancer Charity patron.

Master Cutler Professor Keith Jackson also took part, to raise crucial funds for our ‘see it. treat it.’ MRI simulator appeal.

The Lord Mayor Councillor Andrew Sangar sounded the starting klaxon for the first group of 4-mile walkers. The second group was waved off by an incredible team of Weston Park Cancer Centre professionals: Richard Maxted (Operations Director), Dr Lucy Walkington (Clinical Director) and Ali Mortimer (Nurse Director).

At the finish line, walkers were awarded a medal and cookie from Whites Bakery. They then enjoyed a party-like atmosphere, with live music from local band TOAST and a beer garden hosted by Thornbridge Brewery.

Participants could also spend time in a quiet area of reflection, where our Ribbons of Hope were on display.

Many people join Walk As One in memory of a loved one or after their own personal experience of cancer treatment.

James Marples decided to sign up with his family after his father-in-law, Brian, sadly passed away from cancer in October last year.

Speaking on the day, he said:

“I’m here today with my wife, my mother-in-law and my two children and we’re representing my father-in-law who Weston Park helped during his final stages of cancer.

“He was a hugely positive man and for us, we decided to take part in Walk As One as it’s a really positive event, bringing people together. As well as that, we also want to help raise funds for the charity.”

“Our walkers should be so proud of the £42K raised this year, and for helping us to reach over £200k in total!

“Because of you, we can care for individuals and families during their toughest moments. We can enable cutting-edge research and fund the treatment enhancements that make a real difference to patients.
