Important information - Handling fundraising collections and donations through personal bank accounts
If you are collecting donations on behalf of Weston Park Cancer Charity, please read the information below regarding use of personal bank accounts.
1. Acting as a Pure Conduit:
- If you are simply collecting money on behalf of the charity and transferring the full amount to us, there should be no tax implications.
- Ensure there is a clear record that these funds are donations and not your personal income.
2. Gift Aid Considerations:
- Gift Aid can only be claimed by the charity directly from donors. If donations go through your personal account first, Gift Aid does not apply unless the original donor provides confirmation to the charity.
3. Risk of Misinterpretation:
- HMRC could view money deposited into your account as personal income unless proper records demonstrate it is charity money.
If you're using a personal bank account, here are some best practices to follow:
- Keep clear records of donations and payments to the charity - money transferred into a personal account from a donor should have a reference to the charity.
- Inform donors that their donations are not eligible for Gift Aid if they are processed through your personal account.
- Consider setting up a separate bank account if you frequently handle donations to avoid tax complications.
- Use a dedicated charity collection platform (e.g., JustGiving, GoFundMe, or a direct charity donation pages) to avoid funds being classified as personal income.
