Mayor of South Yorkshire visits Weston Park Cancer Charity

In December, Oliver Coppard, Mayor of South Yorkshire visited Weston Park Cancer Charity’s support centre and met with CEO Emma Clarke, Chair of Trustees Niall Baker and Trustee and Consultant Clinical Oncologist Patricia Fisher.

We showcased the vital services we provide to help everyone facing cancer in our region. From our transport service helping patients get to treatment appointments without the worry of travel, to the emergency hardship grants we make to provide immediate help to people facing the extra costs of cancer in these difficult financial times.

At Weston Park Cancer Charity we’re incredibly grateful to Oliver for showing such interest in our work, the challenges the region faces with cancer diagnosis and survival and for his vision and enthusiasm for creating the healthiest region in the country.

Emma Clarke, CEO of Weston Park Cancer Charity, says:

“Ensuring everyone diagnosed with cancer in communities where there are greatest cancer health inequalities in the region is able to access our support is a huge priority for us and forms part of our strategy.

We are delighted Oliver prioritises the need to tackle health inequality in our region and hope we can work alongside him in making this happen.

At Weston Park Cancer Charity, we strive to be there from the moment people are diagnosed, with them every step of the way. But today, as one in two of us will develop cancer we know we need to do more.”

We hope we can work together to close the care gap and reach those most vulnerable. This year will see us launch our outreach project – taking our cancer support services on the road, out to people and communities across our region, with help from The National Lottery Community Fund and our partners.

This will give people better access to our free support services which are often described as a ‘life-line’ for people facing cancer and their families. It means better access to mental health and wellbeing services and better support for those facing financial difficulty because of their cancer diagnosis.

This World Cancer Day we commit to #CloseTheCareGap.
