Rotherham transport service up and running!

We’re thrilled that with the support of sponsors and a team of volunteer drivers, we have launched our Rotherham transport service to provide free, safe transport between the AESSEAL New York Stadium and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, for anyone in need of cancer treatment.

The launch of our Rotherham transport is the third branch of our free, safe transport provision across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire – following the successful launch of our Chesterfield and Barnsley services in 2021.

Thanks to a wonderful team of volunteer drivers who tirelessly commit their time to Weston Park Cancer Charity, the two services have covered more than 30,000 miles, supporting hundreds of patients in and around each region with free, safe travel.

Our latest service will run twice daily at 9am and 1:30pm from Rotherham United FC’s AESSEAL New York Stadium on New York Way.

As with Barnsley and Chesterfield, the Rotherham service will be operated by a brilliant team of volunteer drivers, who generously give up their time to ensure that people in Rotherham can access potentially life-saving cancer treatment at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

We could not launch this new service without the priceless support of charity patron Darren Baker to get this vital service up and running.

Local businesses Jenkinson & Co, Green Piling Ltd, Complete Shutter Services Ltd, MIS Group and Ron Hull have also teamed up to generously cover the cost of the purchase of the bus which we will use for our Rotherham transport service.

Emma Clarke, Weston Park Cancer Charity CEO, said:

“I’m extremely proud to see the launch of our Rotherham transport service - the third ‘branch’ of our free transport offering – ensuring that everyone across the region, no matter where they live, has access to free transport.

“Put simply, issues with transport can be the difference between a person accepting and declining treatment which could change, or even save, their life.

"Travel to and from Weston Park from Barnsley, Chesterfield or Rotherham, including parking costs, can also cost patients hundreds of pounds per week, particularly for radiotherapy patients who need weeks of daily treatment in Sheffield.

“That’s why our free, safe transport exists; not only does it take away the added logistical stress and strain put on patients and family members following a diagnosis, it makes accessing crucial treatment which is available in Sheffield far easier."
