Steve's Story: A remarkable journey of resilience and giving back amidst terminal cancer diagnosis
Discover the inspiring story of 65-year-old Steve Dixon, an avid runner, football fan, and community champion, who, despite a devastating terminal cancer diagnosis, is determined to give back to the community through volunteering with Weston Park Cancer Charity.
Despite his diagnosis, the father of two and grandfather of three, Steve, who lives in Thorne, is determined to give back to the community by giving his time to help Weston Park Cancer Charity.
More than 32 years ago, Steve was told he had polyps in his throat, and has since had over 60 operations on his vocal cords.
In 2021. Steve was running his 13th Great North Run, and he knew something wasn’t right and for the first time, he felt like he couldn’t complete it.
Steve then went to his GP as he was really struggling with his health. After a series of tests, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
It was also found that Steve has sarcoma in his liver, which means he is unable to have an operation to remove his tumours as the risk of the cancer spreading is too great.
Steve said: “When I was diagnosed, it was heartbreaking. Not just for me, but for my loving wife and family. I have a small, close family and have always been a huge family man.”
Steve is managing his treatment at home with tablets and thanks his wife Julie for her amazing support.
He said: “Julie has been tremendous throughout. We met on a blind date more than 43 years ago, and it’s safe to say she’s been stuck with me ever since! She’s my rock, and my complete support system.”
Since his diagnosis, Steve has made it his aim to volunteer for the charity that has been there for him and his family. He recently volunteered as a steward at our Walk As One fundraising event in September.
Steve even bought his very cute one-year-old cocker spaniel, Dottie, along with him. Dottie was, as expected, a big hit with the walkers!
He added: “Dottie was a true star of the show at Walk As One – she received lots of treats and cuddles. It was a great event to be a part of and I was happy to offer my services on the day.
“I have done other volunteering for Weston Park Cancer Charity including bucket collections and fundraising events. I love to be involved and help where I can.
“I am an ambassador for the charity as they have helped support me so much over the past year. It is a pleasure to help raise awareness for the amazing work they do for the community.
“I am a self-confessed chatterbox and I truly do have a zest for life. I’m not going to let cancer stand in the way of that. I am a passionate person and I believe that by volunteering I can continue to make a real difference to other people.”
Steve praises the charity’s fantastic support. He said: “Weston Park Cancer Charity’s services are truly remarkable. As a region, we are so lucky to have their services right on our doorstep.
“I know they’re there when I need their support and it’s that sort of peace of mind you need when you’re facing cancer.”
