‘The coffee mornings have been a lifeline of support for me’ – Steve’s story
Steve, who was diagnosed with cancer in his head and neck in 2018, has praised our regular coffee mornings as a ‘lifeline of support’.
Steve has been attending our coffee mornings for many years and has told us about the positive difference the support group has been for him.
He said: “The coffee mornings have been a lifeline of support for me. They are an opportunity for people to talk through their concerns and their worries in a completely safe space.
“The coffee mornings are unique in the way that everyone who is there is there for a shared experience. I have formed lifelong friends and what feels like a new extended family.
“Not only do we get to enjoy a hot drink (and a cake or two!), we get to talk to other people going through similar experiences.
“We also have the opportunity to talk to the charity’s amazing staff about any additional support we can access and if there are any fundraising events we can get involved in.
“The group is uplifting, and we always leave feeling much better after sharing our experiences with each other. It’s just a reminder that we’re not on our own as well – and that really makes a difference.
“It really is one big family at Weston Park Cancer Charity.”
Steve’s commitment to the charity goes beyond attending coffee mornings. Steve’s wife and his stepson Carl are keen volunteers for the charity and have raised hundreds of pounds through various fundraising activities.
Steve has also made several appearances as our mascot - ‘Westie’ – at many of our events!
He added: “Weston Park Cancer Charity is truly outstanding and I can’t thank the amazing staff at both the charity and the hospital for their fantastic care and support over the years.”
