Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day raises more than £31,400

Despite the rain, Weston Park Cancer Charity's annual Golf Day was able to raise £31,490 thanks to the support and enthusiasm of everyone involved.

The money raised at this year's Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, sponsored by Special Steel Group, will help us enhance cancer treatment, improve support and fund vital research – ensuring people across our region receive the very best cancer treatment and support.

The event, held at Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield, saw entries from 42 teams, including the main sponsors alongside major local firms in the construction, travel and entertainment industries.

Generous sponsorship and backing from organisations and individuals helped raise vital funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity, as did generous donations, competition entries, auctions and raffle tickets purchased by players on the day.

Charity patron John Price set up the forerunner to the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, having defied a terminal cancer diagnosis to see his sons through their education, qualify in their respective professionals, get married and have children.

In response, John set up the golf day years ago to raise £100,000 for Weston Park – to pay back the cost of the clinical trial he took part in. John’s golf day eventually became the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, continuing a legacy which has seen him raise more than £350,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity to date.

Weston Park Cancer Charity events manager Rachael Thomas said: "I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support for the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day.

"The total raised on the day shows everyone's absolute commitment to supporting the one in two facing cancer in our region.

"As well as the 42 teams who took part, we are grateful to our main sponsor Special Steel Group, all our hole sponsors, Maggie May's Sheffield, Molson Coors, Pricecheck, alongside Pago Premium Fruit Juice for providing refreshments and Bradwell Skips for all our waste management needs.

"Our thanks not only go to our colleagues and volunteers who worked in the rain all day and still kept a smile on their faces, but also those who covered our Charity Hub, and who supported in any way in the lead-up to the event.

"It did in fact rain all day – however, that didn’t stop the golfers. Some teams could only play half the course due to the rain, but no one's spirits were dampened."
